Näin uutisoi tämän päiväinen Ilta-Sanomat:
’Tapahtuma sai kuitenkin julkisuudessa käsittämättömät mittasuhteet, kun maailman parhaisiin golfaajiin kuuluva Vijay Singh arvosteli rajusti Sörenstamin hyväksymistä kilpailuun ja vetäytyi lopulta mielenosoituksellisesti koko turnauksesta. ’
Rupsesiko VS pelkäämään liikaa, että AS tulee ja päihittää? 🙂 Tai sitten kommentiensa jälkeen ei uskaltanut kohdata Sörenstamia kasvotusten…

Taisi kyllä uutisointi netissä mennä toisella tavalla 🙂 Ilta-Sanomia ei niin herkästi uskoisi, kyllä ne sen verran suoltaa kaiken näköistä juttua.

Netissä muistaakseni eilen luin, että Vijay lupasi vaimolleen pitää viikon taukoa, jos voittaa kisan. Näin kävi ja lupaukset vaimolla on pidettävä 😉
Mitä tarkoitat, että uutisointi netissä taisi mennä toisella tavalla? Asiastahan on kirjoitettu valtavasti ja jälkeenpäin korjailtu VS:n kommentteja. Ainoa vahvistus poisjäänniille, jonka löysin, on turnauksen lähtölista, josta en löytänyt Vijayta.

In discussions of what Annika Sorenstam will shoot this week in the Colonial, only one aspect of her performance is overlooked: the facts.
You would think that no human had ever before moved back and played from a different set of tees. Actually, few things are more common in golf.
You would think that no one had ever calibrated the difference in difficulty between one set of tees and another, then, after examining thousands of rounds, reduced that difference to a simple number. Yet exactly such numbers are on the scorecards of almost every first-rate golf course.
You would think that nobody had ever noticed that men on the Champions Tour (formerly the Senior Tour) play on courses of similar length to many LPGA events. In fact, there’s no great difference in how a normal Champions Tour event and many top LPGA events are ’set up.’
Given the parallels between conditions on the Champions Tour and the LPGA Tour, you’d think everybody would intuitively ask: ’Well, how many strokes higher do Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw shoot when they take a crack at the PGA Tour? Annika will shoot about that much higher, too.’
But, so far, nobody has asked such questions. Certainly no one in Las Vegas, where the ’over-under’ line on Sorenstam’s first round at Colonial is 76.5. The guys in Vegas better polish up that line before all the female golfers in America find out about it and end up owning the Strip.
Even Sorenstam couldn’t hold her tongue when told about that cynical gambler’s estimate of her ability. ’I can do better than that,’ she told lpga.com.
By any and all available statistical methods, it is reasonable to assume that Sorenstam’s average score, if she played the PGA Tour, would be about 71, perhaps 71.5 — compared to her stroke average of 68.7 on the LPGA Tour last year. Above 72 is almost out of the question.
In other words, if Sorenstam played the PGA Tour full time, she’d probably crack the top 100, make the cut about half the time and, perhaps a couple of times in her career, win a regular weekly Tour event.
All of the data available, and there’s a ton of it, indicates that Sorenstam, whose average drive this season is 275 yards, should feel right at home at Colonial. She’s not out of her league. Actually, she’s probably right in the middle of it in terms of talent. She’s a typical PGA Tour pro. Most likely, this is the first time she’s been in the right golf league for her. On the LPGA Tour, where she won 11 times ’02, she’s just much too good.
Who is she like statistically? Probably a Tour player such as 5-foot-9 Jay Williamson. He had a 71.38 scoring average last year and had an average drive of 275.8 yards. He’s finished 125, 106, 109 and 144 on the money list the last four years and made the cut 47 percent of the time. He has never won on Tour, but he was once fourth at Pebble Beach and has been a contender at the Kemper Open twice. Last year, he was ninth here.
Because of her champion’s temperament, Sorenstam is probably better than that. The man she may resemble most statistically is Tom Watson. Last year, Watson’s average score on the Champions Tour was 69.57 and his average drive 268.8 yards — not quite as good as Sorenstam’s numbers on LPGA courses, where conditions may be slightly easier. In four regular PGA Tour events, Watson’s average score was 71.36 and his average drive 277 yards. He was competitive enough, even at 53, to finish seventh in (drum roll) the Colonial.
This week, Sorenstam will have to play a 7,036-yard course. That’s about 500 to 600 yards longer than the courses on which the women’s majors are played. From the hubbub, you’d assume no one in golf had any data on how an additional 550 yards would affect scores. In reality, every course has a rating that approximates its par to a scratch golfer. If you want a fierce debate, just try to get Pine Valley or Augusta National’s rating changed by a 10th of a stroke. These are not imprecise gauges.
For example, the Olympic Club, a frequent U.S. Open site, is rated 74.4 from the back tees, but 71.5 from a set of tees that are 658 yards shorter. So what’s 658 yards worth at Olympic? Just 2.9 shots. At Congressional, another U.S. Open site, the difference between the rating from the back tees and a set of tees 361 yards shorter is 1.9 strokes.
You get the idea. On a great course, 600 extra yards is worth about 21/2 strokes. Such information is routinely used in handicap tournaments. Nobody doubts that it’s accurate within a tiny margin of error. But as soon as a gender issue arrives, everybody forgets that there’s a mountain of facts to analyze, rather than a hill of emotion to vent.
Add 21/2 strokes to Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour average of 68.7 and it lands you at around 71.2 — the same level as a Tour regular like Williamson or a great senior like Watson when he plays the PGA Tour.
If this analysis is roughly correct, and if Sorenstam can withstand all the media circus at Colonial, where might she finish if she shoots a four-round total that’s 10 shots (2.5 strokes per round) higher than her LPGA numbers? Where would such a performance land her in the Colonial?
When Sorenstam gets hot on some of the easier LPGA tracks, she can shoot insanely low scores. Last year, she ripped off weeks of 64-66-66, 69-62-68 and 66-67-68-65. She can post in the high 260s for a four-round event. Add 10 shots to that and she’d be in the high 270s at Colonial. Last year, a 277 would’ve put her 12th in the Colonial, 10 shots behind the winner.
Maybe that’s too optimistic. The toughest tests Sorenstam faces are the women’s majors. Last year in the U.S. Women’s Open on a 6,509-yard course, she shot 278. That range — high 270s to low 280s — is typical for good Sorenstam finishes in majors in which the rough is probably as tough as Colonial’s. Add 10 shots to that and you’d still be talking about Sorenstam making the cut but finishing near the back of the field Sunday.
The general view of Sorenstam’s chances is much too bleak, especially among some who should know better — Tour pros. They seem to think she may get eaten alive. ’I wish her the best of luck, I really do. She has a big heart. I will give her that. I don’t think I would be able to do what she is going to do [this] week. I really don’t,’ said Nick Price, making it sound like Sorenstam will meet hungry lions roaming wild between holes.
Let’s, just once, reduce this week’s controversy to its golf core. Par for the Tour pros at Colonial is 70. For Sorenstam, it is probably 72 or 73.
But she knows how to break par. Sometimes by a lot.

Nyt olette väärässä. Villit kortit, eli sponsors exemptionit, annetaan juuri sellaisille pelaajille, jotka _eivät_ kyseiseen kisaan muuten pääsisi. Normaalisti tämä saattaa olla joku paikallinen tuntematon klubipro, joku julkkis, jolla ei todellakaan ole tarvittavaa taitoa menestyä ammattilaiskisassa, jonkun alemman tourin tuntematon pelaaja tahi joku wanha has-been mestari, joka pelaa ekan kierroksen 85 ja lopettaa pelin kesken. Kuitenkin koko villin kortin idea on nostaa kilpailun näkyvyyttä paikallisen ja laajemmankin yleisön silmissä. En oikeastaan keksi ketään, kenet kisaan voisi värvätä mustana hevosena mukaan, ja toisi enemmän huomioarvoa kuin naisten maailmanykkönen, Annika. (Tiger ja kumppanithan sinne pääsevät muutenkin.)
Ja pitää muistaa, että lisäjulkisuus tuo lisää sponsoreita, ja lisää palkkiorahaa jopa V. Singhin pussiin. Ammattilaisgolfarit ovat myös ammattilaisviihdyttäjiä, jotka saisivat tehdä jotain muuta leipänsä eteen, jos yleisöä ei olisi. Puritanismilla ei ole sijaa tour-bisneksessä.

siihen aikaan luultiin vielä että Tiger pelaa Colonialissa, vastasin hänelle

Tuoppi on kyllä vankasti oikeassa, villit kortit ovat kisan näkyvyyttä parantamaan, ei mahdollisen potentiaalisen voittajan hankkimiseksi kisaan. Villejä kortteja jopa vaihdellaan kisojen kesken: anna meidän kaverille omaan kisaasi, niin annamme sinun kaverillesi meidän kisaamme.
Esim Suomessa jos näiden kahden, Espoon ja Talman, näkyvyyttä haluttaisiin parantaa, annettaisiin kortit Nigel Manselille ja Boris Beckerille tai muille vastaan tasoisille julkku-golfareille, ei niille aloitteleville ammattilaisille, jotka kuitenkin putoavat 2 kierroksen jälkeen, ja joista suuri yleisö, jolle sponsorit haluavat sanomansa kohdistaa, ole koskaan kuullut.
Ainoa syy pitää nämä kisat on tarjota sponsoreille viihteen kautta näkyvyyttä. Ja muutaman prosentin osanottajista on tuotava se näkyvyys. Jopa sellaisten asioiden avulla, jotka eivät vedes liity golfiin.
