Question:

I think we have all seen super slow motion used to analyze professional golfers’ swings. Amazing stuff without a doubt. Has this technology been used to look ay shaft dynamics instead of the swing? It seems that many questions about how and how much a shaft behaves during the swing could be answered.

Tom Wishon:

yes, we have a Redlake high speed camera and we did spend a little time trying to capture this. It’s really tough to see this even with a high speed camera because the difference between a shaft that bends forward to increase launch angle by 2 degs vs a shaft that arrives straight at impact is an incredibly small amount when it comes to seeing the curvature. But we do know from our launch monitor work combined with the modeling work that we are doing that most definitely there are far more cases where the shaft arrives at impact bent forward than bent back. Most of the times that I have seen a photo that seems to show the shaft bent back, it has been taken just a split second after the face actually meets the ball, at which point the mass of the ball really does push the head back and with it, the shaft.
