The swing of a golf club is indeed an example of what physicist calls a bouble pendulum: the arms of the golfer act as one pendulum connected to the club, which acts as another pendulum.

(…)

(…) fundamental approach to my reseach: how I find from a photograph what a professional golfer does when he swings a driver and how I establish a mathematical model using Newtonian dynamics that allows me to make calculations that give me the same clubhead speed curves as I obtained from the photograph. With the same mathematical expressions, I find that I am then able to calculate all sorts of things concerning the golf swing.

(…)

Usually, little progress can be made in understanding a physical event, such as the swing of a golf club, if the event is initially considered in all its complexity. The investigator must choose a simplified model to simulate the event.

Tedin kirjaa myydään (ainakin Akateemisessa) muovikelmussa.

Takasivun mainosteksti kuitenkin näkyy:

Improve your golf game by learning the underlying fundamentals of the golf swing in this acclaimed, unique contribution to the sport. Finally, you’ll understand:

* why shortening your backswing doesn’t substantially decrease clunhead velocity
* what components contribute to the optimal swing and what variations are acceptable
* how and why properly shifting your weight adds to distance
* why a golf ball behaves ans spins as it does

and much more.

Written by a physicist after some twenty years of research, Physics of Golf is the only book devoted exclusively to explaining the science behind a succesfull golf game. Technical appendices offer details for the so inclined.

Tämähän on todellinen filosofian/tekniikan ylioppilaan märkä uni. Vaikeita valintoja.
